Benefits for Heart, Brain, Eyes, and More...
Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA collectively have a favorable impact on the heart. Additionally, DHA contributes to maintaining normal vision and healthy brain function. It's no coincidence that consuming fatty fish, naturally rich in EPA and DHA, is part of official recommendations for a healthy diet. However, a considerable number of people don't consume enough fatty fish to meet the recommended daily doses of EPA and DHA. Various reasons contribute to this shortfall, including concerns about environmental contaminants (especially dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs], and heavy metals like methylmercury) found in fish. This issue does not apply to high-quality fish oil supplements, which are purified to eliminate or minimize these contaminants. Consequently, many individuals choose to supplement their daily diet with fish oil to reap the health benefits of these crucial long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.
A high-dose fish oil supplement like Ultra Pure EPA/DHA 1000 mg offers the advantage of easily achieving health effects that typically occur with higher doses of EPA and DHA, requiring only 2 to 3 softgels per day. Research indicates that a daily intake of 2 grams (2 softgels) of EPA and DHA contributes to maintaining healthy blood fat levels. Blood contains various fats (triglycerides) derived from our diet and produced by the liver. EPA and DHA positively influence the blood composition concerning fat content. When taken at a daily dose of 3 grams (3 softgels), EPA and DHA also support blood pressure. Therefore, Ultra Pure EPA/DHA 1000 mg is an excellent addition to a healthy and balanced diet for those looking to support blood pressure and maintain healthy blood fat levels.
Required Dosage of EPA/DHA for Optimal Omega-3 Fatty Acid Levels
The omega-3 fatty acid status refers to the amount of EPA and DHA present in the body. Today, it's possible to measure the omega-3 fatty acid status, often done through a finger-prick blood test determining the omega-3 index. The omega-3 index represents the percentage of EPA and DHA in the total fatty acid composition of red blood cell membranes, providing a reliable measure of the omega-3 fatty acid status. Research suggests that an optimal omega-3 index is at least 8%. For many individuals, especially those with a Western diet (typically high in omega-6 fatty acids), achieving high doses of EPA/DHA is necessary to reach this target. Supplementation with 2 grams of EPA/DHA daily (2 softgels) typically raises the omega-3 index to around 8% after approximately three months, starting from a low baseline of around 4.5%, a common value in Western countries. For maintenance, a daily intake of approximately 700-1000 mg of EPA/DHA may suffice, depending on individual dietary habits. To assess your omega-3 status, consider ordering Vitals' omega-3 finger-prick test.
Fish Oil from Golden Omega
Ultra Pure EPA/DHA 1000 mg contains fish oil from Golden Omega, a producer located in a state-of-the-art facility in northern Chile. The facility is strategically positioned next to the waters where anchovies, used in the fish oil production, are caught. This proximity allows for quick processing of the fish, maintaining its freshness. Golden Omega collaborates exclusively with certified fishermen to minimize the ecological impact.
Golden Omega prioritizes purity and quality in fish oil production. Their patented purification process eliminates contaminants from the fish, and a patented concentration process ensures high-quality products. This is evident in the exceptionally clear color of the fish oil and, most importantly, in the very low TOTOX values of their oils (averaging below 5). TOTOX, Total Oxidation Value, is an indicator of oil freshness/rancidity. Fish oil is particularly susceptible to oxidation due to its high content of vulnerable unsaturated fatty acids. A low TOTOX value is crucial because rancid oils appear to be unhealthy and serves as a good measure of the quality of a fish oil supplement. Additionally, a low TOTOX value minimizes the likelihood of fish burps, which is a significant advantage for many consumers.
The Difference Between Fish Oil in Triglyceride and Ethyl Ester Forms
There are various types of fish oil supplements on the market. Apart from supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids in the natural triglyceride form (often seen in liquid fish oil like Liquid EPA/DHA 1200 mg) and in the re-esterified triglyceride form (such as Ultra Pure EPA/DHA 1000 mg from Vitals), there are products that contain EPA and DHA in the so-called ethyl ester form. What exactly is the difference?
Naturally, fats in food, including fish oil, exist in the form of triglycerides. These consist of three fatty acid molecules bound to one glycerol molecule (see Figure 1). In the case of unprocessed fish oil, one of these is EPA or DHA, and the other two consist of different fatty acids. This natural concentration of EPA/DHA in fish oil is typically not higher than about 30%. However, for fish oil supplements in softgels, higher concentrations are desired (up to 80-90%) because of the limited space in a softgel. Therefore, during the production process, the fatty acid chains are separated from glycerol, and EPA/DHA fatty acids are isolated through extraction. As these free fatty acids are highly unstable, they are then individually bound to an ethanol molecule. These compounds are called ethyl esters, and this method is used for many fish oil supplements. In the production of the fish oil in Ultra Pure EPA/DHA 1000 mg by Golden Omega, the EPA/DHA fatty acids are reattached (re-esterified) to a glycerol chain, forming a triglyceride again (abbreviated as rTG, which stands for 're-esterified triglyceride'). This way, it resembles the natural fatty acid structure, but with three EPA/DHA side chains instead of just one.
EPA/DHA as Triglycerides is More Absorbable than as Ethyl Esters
In the body, fats (triglycerides) are broken down into monoglycerides and free fatty acids so that they are small enough to be absorbed into the intestinal cell. They are then reassembled into triglycerides. As triglycerides, fatty acids are absorbed through the lymphatic system and enter the bloodstream. The disadvantage of ethyl esters is that they require an additional enzyme to be split into free fatty acids. Moreover, they need surrounding triglycerides from food to allow the fat-splitting enzymes to work effectively. Therefore, multiple studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form are more absorbable. This difference is even more significant when the omega-3 supplement is taken with a meal that doesn't contain much fat, such as an average breakfast or lunch. For omega-3 fatty acids in triglyceride form, absorption is also better when taken with a meal containing fat compared to a low-fat meal or on an empty stomach.
